Itinerary

DAY 1: PALERMO


  • Welcome to Sicily and the beautiful capital city of Palermo. Meet your tour leader and settle into your hotel.

  • Before the evening welcome meeting and aperitivo (happy hour), explore the charming city of Palermo.

  • Enjoy local aperitivo favorites such as the Sicilian Spritz prepared with blood orange juice, pomegranate juice and fresh mint. Try ancient local appetizers such as Panelle (chickpea flour fritters), Crocche (fried potato), Arancini(rice balls filled with ham and cheese), Sfincione (pizza bread) and, of course, the famous Cannolo filled with ricotta cheese, chocolate chips or candied fruit.

  • Continue with your tour leader to a local restaurant to taste more traditional Sicilian dishes.

  • Overnight at the hotel in Palermo.

DAY 2: PALERMO & MONREALE


  • Explore the city during a guided walking tour. Begin the journey visiting the Massimo Theatre and then continue to a lively open-air food market with strong Arab influences and market stands filled with fresh fish, cheeses, fruits and vegetables. Taste the typical street food of the area while taking in local Sicilian life. Continue the tour to Piazza Pretoria and Monreale Cathedral and Dome. The Cathedral, an example of Arab-Norman art and architecture, was founded in 1174 by William II. The Dome depicts Biblical scenes in golden mosaics.

  • Spend the afternoon meandering through the city streets and discovering the unique history of this Mediterranean treasure.

  • Overnight at the hotel in Palermo.

DAY 3: ERICE & OLIVE OIL FARMHOUSE


  • Depart for Erice which is a medieval town with magnificent views and an exciting history. Stroll through the ancient streets and visit homemade pastry shops renown for the marzipan candies and more.

  • Travel to an Olive Oil Farmhouse for oil and wine tasting and lunch with local products.

  • Continue to the Marsala Region while traveling along the Salt Way Road noted for its unique landscapes, pristine waters, salt-mines and white windmills. Make a stop at a local winery for a visit and a tasting before returning to Palermo.

  • Overnight at the hotel in Palermo.

DAY 4: PALERMO-AGRIGENTO


  • Check-out and depart for a local dairy farm to learn how milk is processed, observe cheese production and taste a variety of high-quality products.

  • Continue to a local bakery for a pizza and bread preparation demonstration.

  • Enjoy a picnic-style lunch including local Sicilian food specialtiesand enjoy local life in a beautiful surrounding before continuing to Agrigento.

  • Cap off a lovely day enjoying the local cuisine with dinner in a small local village with a Sicilian family. Help prepare a Cubaita (traditional almond torrone) while taking a historical journey through the many Sicilian food traditions.

  • Overnight stay near Agrigento.

DAY 5: AGRIGENTO-SIRACUSA


  • Check-out and depart for Agrigento.

  • Take a guided visit of one the most spectacular and most famous ancient Greek sites—the Doric Temples Archaeological Park consisting of eight temples built between 510 and 430 B.C.

  • Continue to a local winery for a visit, a wine tasting and a light lunch.

  • After lunch, depart for Piazza Armerina for a guided visit of the famous 4th Century Villa Romana del Casale built as a hunting lodge and home to well-preserved Roman mosaics. Following a spectacular visit, check into the hotel near Siracusa and spend the evening relaxing or exploring the area.

  • Overnight in Siracusa.

DAY 6: SIRACUSA


  • Visit the Siracusa Archaeological Park which highlights classical antiquities like the Greek Theatre, the Roman Amphitheatre and the Paradise Quarry.

  • Stroll through the quaint streets of Ortigia Island. Visit the Piazza del Duomo, the cathedral and the Temple of Athena.

  • Continue to the local street market to see a variety of local products: fruit, vegetables, fish and meat.

  • Spend the afternoon wandering through the eastern parts of Siracusa; find a maze of streets that lead to the southern-most part of the island and Castello Maniace. Cap off the journey at the Byzantine Miqwe; the largest and most ancient Jewish ritual baths in Europe.

  • Overnight stay in Siracusa.

DAY 7: SIRACUSA & TRUFFLE HUNT


  • Spend the day exploring Siracusa or joining the optional Truffle Hunt and Step Back in Time.

  • Optional Truffle Hunt: Take a peaceful walk through the forest and the beautiful Sicilian countryside with an experienced truffle hunter and specially trained dog. Follow the dog as he sniffs, searches and digs for the valuable delicacies. After the hunt and, more importantly, the find, enjoy a dinner prepared with the fresh truffle from the search. An expert chef will teach you how to clean and use the truffle in the evening’s meal. The plates will be paired with delicious local wines.

  • Optional Step Back in Time: Before dinner, visit the museum dedicated to the artisanal works of the local agriculture and its farmers. Tour the farmer’s home, the millstone, the blacksmith’s shop, the carpenter’s shop, the shoemaker’s shop and other historical artisan workshops. Step back in time and discover how the locals worked and lived.

  • Overnight stay in Siracusa.

DAY 8: SIRACUSA-NOTO-TAORMINA


  • Check-out and depart for the Sicilian Baroque masterpiece: Noto. The architecture is characterized by the honey tone of tufa stone decorated with masks, lion heads and other embellishments. The Noto Cathedral is dedicated to Saint Nicholas and built in perfect Sicilian Baroque style.

  • Continue to Modica, home of the 400-year-old Sicilian chocolate making tradition often flavored with chili-pepper, cinnamon and vanilla and based on ancient Aztec recipes, where you will visit a local chocolatier and taste some of the delicious product. After the sweet experience, spend some time exploring Modica which was damaged in 1693 by an earthquake and rebuilt in Sicilian Baroque style. The houses, churches, domes, bell towers and buildings seem to be stacked on top of each creating a beautiful and intricate uniformity.

  • Head to Ragusa, a breath-taking town rebuilt after the 1693 earthquake and divided in two sections, the newer or upper part and the original site which draws the most visitors and the most spectacular reviews for its Baroque-style architecture and narrow winding streets.

  • Finally, drive to beautiful Sicilian resort town of Taormina.

  • Overnight stay in the Taormina area.

DAY 9: TAORMINA-ETNA


  • Take an off-road adventure on the way to Etna, the famous and still active volcano. Stop at the Alcantara Gorges made of basaltic lava and shaped by the Alcantara River. Along the journey, visit Castiglione di Sicilia, a medieval-hill village overlooking the Alcantara Valley. Walk to the Belvedere of the 12th Century Castello di Lauria built on the highest cliff of the medieval village. Stop at the 2002 lava flow and the Ragabo Pine Forest which hides the Cave of Corruccio and formed by flowing lava. Drive along the Mareneve Road and reach Piano Provenzana; this is a ski resort and local of the 2002 eruption.

  • Before returning to Taormina, travel along a Sicilian wine road which crosses large expanses of vineyards (Etna D.O.C.). Stop at a local winery to enjoy some relaxation, wine and local cuisine while surrounded by natural beauty.

  • Overnight stay in the Taormina area.

DAY 10: DEPARTURE


  • Depart from Catania airport or continue your exploration of Sicily and the culinary specialties.
